Kevin Blackwell gave a start to Ian Moore and brought on Simon Walton in the second-half as both had recovered from injury, but Rod Hulse had not recovered from his ankle injury that he had sustained at Haugesund in midweek and Gylfi Einarsson was the only player not to figure in the fixture. Former United Norwegian International, Alf-Inge Haaland, made a twenty minute appearance for the home side in the second half. Leeds controlled the game in the first half and Eirik Bakke put them into the lead as early as the eighth minute when he scored with a powerful far post header. There were many impressive performances in the Leeds ranks and it emphasized the competition for places in the team. At the start of the second half Kevin Blackwell replaced Gary Kelly, with Frazer Richardson, while Matthew Kilgallon came on for Sean Gregan, Seth Johnson for Eirik Bakke and Freddy Sandos for Ian Moore as he sought to find his best combination. He made another quadruple change in the sixty-third minute as he brought on Clarke Carlisle for Paul Butler, Stephen Crainey for Dan Harding, Simon Walton for Shaun Derry and Danny Pugh for Eddie Lewis. Eight minutes later he made his final two changes as Matthew Spring replaced Jermaine Wright and Michael Ricketts replaced David Healy. It was Matthew Spring who get United's second goal in the dying minute, when he side-footed home the ball into the net after the lively Freddy Sandos had set him up. The Leeds attack threatened but did not score, as David Healy showed neat touches and Ian Moore forced the home keeper to desperately save with his legs early in the game. Freddy Sandos was lively and needed close attention from the home defence, but after the keeper had denied him with a fine save late in the game, he had the last laugh when he set up Spring and then did the same for Ricketts but watched in disbelief as the forward contrived to miss a seemingly unmissable chance to score.
